PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively reduce engine vibration during a cylinder cut-off operation. SOLUTION: During the cylinder cut-off operation, an ECU 23 makes an exhaust valve 15 of a halted cylinder opened in an intake stroke, and makes it closed in a compression stroke, a combustion and expansion stroke, and an exhaust stroke, while keeping an intake valve 13 of the halted cylinder opened in all of the strokes. In this case, an appropriate cylinder pressure of the halted cylinder (the maximum cylinder pressure of the halted cylinder necessary for effectively reducing the engine vibration) is calculated as a target maximum cylinder pressure of the halted cylinder, by using an actual maximum cylinder pressure of a combustion cylinder detected by a cylinder pressure sensor 20. Target valve closing timing of the exhaust valve 12 of the halted cylinder in the intake stroke is set so that the actual maximum cylinder pressure of the halted cylinder detected by the cylinder pressure sensor 20 matches with the target maximum cylinder pressure (= the appropriate cylinder pressure). An electromagnetic actuating apparatus 17 of the exhaust valve 15 is controlled so that the valve closing timing of the exhaust valve of the halted cylinder in the intake stroke becomes the target valve closing timing.
