A surface emitting laser, a method of fabricating the same, and an optical transmission module are provided to pass through laser beams of 850nm by forming an opening part from one surface of a substrate to an end part on a substrate side of a light emission part though a gallium arsenide substrate is used. A surface emission laser includes a substrate(1), a semiconductor laminate(2), and a pair of electrodes. The semiconductor laminate(2) is formed on one surface of the substrate(1) and includes a light emission part for emitting laser beams. The electrodes are used for applying a voltage to pass a current in the direction of lamination of the light emission part. The substrate(1) includes an opening part(5) from the other surface of the substrate(1) to an end part on a substrate side of the light emission part. The opening part(5) includes a lens(6) formed by a lateral surface thereof.
