PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus which is small although it has a driving section. SOLUTION: The image pickup apparatus is provided with an image pickup unit 2 having a photoelectric converter 8 for converting an optical image into an electric signal, an optical unit 4 for forming the optical image of a subject on the converter 8, a driver 5 for driving at least a part of the optical unit 4 in an optical axis direction, and a detector 6 for detecting the position of at least the one portion of the optical direction of the optical unit 4.
