PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent thin film, functioning as a luminescent layer of a self-luminescent type image display apparatus such as a thin film electroluminescent display or a field emission display, in which ultrafine particles are less liable to cause aggregation and surface treatment of the particles is readily carried out and concentration quenching is less liable to occur when obtaining high-efficiency luminescence by using the fluorescent powder in which ultrafine particles are formed. SOLUTION: The thin film is obtained by burying fine powder of stoichiometric fluorescent substance having≤10 nm particle diameter into a thin film composed of a matrix material having wider band gap than that of the fluorescent substance, using EuGa2S4 as the fluorescent substance and using ZnS as the matrix material and alternately forming a fluorescent layer composed of EuGa2S4 and having small thickness and a matrix material layer composed of ZnS and having relatively large thickness. Since the fluorescent layer is a small layer having a thickness of≤10 molecular layer, the layer is actually formed into a island-like shape (dotted shape) between matrix material layers.
