The system comprises a hydraulic pump (2) which is connected to or can be driven by the engine and a hydraulic circuit which is connected to the pump and contains a pressure valve for increasing the temperature of the circulating fluid whilst at the same time reducing its pressure. A heat exchanger (4) transfers heat from the fluid to air used to heat the inside of the vehicle. The fluid used is oil.
