A mobile ad hoc network device for mobile teams is provided. The mobile ad h oc network has a plurality of layers, including a device layer, a core engine, a platform layer, an API, and an application layer. The device layer is a physical interface to the core engine and platform, and enables the incoming and outgoing flow of information. Examples include a wireless radio frequency device, and a positioning device such as GPS. The core engine includes a routing engine that manages the self- forming and self-healing ad hoc network.The platform layer manages communication and coordination between network peers. This includes device discovery, connecti on- less and connection-oriented communication, sharing of node characteristics, and sharing of applications and information.
