<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display capable of minimizing display color change associated with temperature change. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display, a coloring system of an electrically controlled birefringence mode (ECB mode) is used and a nematic liquid crystal 85 aligned in a direction nearly vertical to a substrate when no voltage is applied and having negative dielectric anisotropy is used. A range of voltage where a changing ratio ΔR/ΔT of an optical retardation amount R to temperature T is substantially zero exists in a condition of applied voltage of the threshold value of Freedericksz transition or more and if the maximum voltage value in the range is defined as V<SB>1</SB>, the display color when voltage V<SB>1</SB>is applied is made to exist in a region satisfying two relations of [X>0.4, Y<0.45] in the XY chromaticity coordinates. At this time, the number of display colors can be increased by intermingling a pixel formed by using a green color filter. Temperature dependence of contrast is canceled by adopting normally black constitution. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
