PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which does not give rise to color irregularity even when a relay optical system is disposed only for the specific color. SOLUTION: The light source light from a light source unit 21 is split in colors by first and second dichroic mirrors 23a and 23b disposed in a light splitting optical system 23. The R light and the G light are made incident as it is as, and the B light is made incident through the relay optical system 24 as illumination light on respectively corresponding liquid crystal light valves 25a to 25c. The respective liquid crystal light valves 25a to 25c have the two-dimensional refractive index distribution modulated by the image signal from the outside and modulate the illumination light two-dimensionally spatially in pixel units. At this time, the relay optical system 24 of a high grade is built into the light splitting optical system 23 and therefore the uniform illumination can be achieved even with the B light varying in optical path length with respect to the R light and the G light. The respective liquid crystal light valves 25a to 25c can therefore be illuminated uniformly over the entire part including the central part and the peripheral part and the image quality of the high grade free of the color irregularity can be obtained even relating to the projected image.
