<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the operation of a writing utensil with a switch button for energizing an illuminator using a battery is complicated because the switch button is an unsupported unit independently of a writing operation mechanism and therefore, that an operation to eject a pen point from the barrel and an operation to light up the illuminator have to be performed separately from each other. <P>SOLUTION: This writing utensil has a writing part, a detection part for detecting a state wherein a user grips the writing utensil or writes with it and a notification means for notifying the user of the state wherein the writing utensil is gripped or used for writing as detected by the detection part.
