PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a papermaking additive coping with high-speed papermaking even in the case of using a pulp having high waste paper content or in an environment having high fine fiber content and highly closed condition, having high paper-strength increasing effect and drainage rate and giving a paper especially having good texture. SOLUTION: The papermaking additive contains (A) an ampholytic acrylamide polymer having a branched-chain structure and (B) a compound comprising (f) an alkylene polyamine and/or (g) a compound produced by reacting an alkylenepolyamine, an aliphatic monoamine or ammonia with an epihalohydrin.
