A master cylinder 10 is provided with a longitudinally extending bore 12 having a piston 14 slidably mounted therein and adapted to be supported at its rearmost end in the release position (not shown) against annular stop means formed by a washer 22 and a snap ring 24, the piston being provided with a recessed rear portion 26 for receiving an actuating push rod 40 which is located in the recess by means of a retainer member 32 which is slidable in the bore 12 and which includes an annular base portion 34 and resilient fingers 38 bent from the inner edge of the base portion to extend into an annular groove 46 formed on the push rod, the outer diameter of the base portion 34 of the retainer member 32 being less than the diameter of the bore 12 but larger than the inner diameter of the stop means to permit transverse movement of the push rod 40 relative to the axis of the bore. The push rod is provided with a tapered portion 43 which enables the resilient fingers 38 to widen before engaging the groove when the push rod is being assembled to the master cylinder piston. |
