In a coffee or other beverage making machine, inner and outer vessels 6 and 13 of a centrifugal separator, driven by motor 30, can be braked abruptly so that semisolid coffee residue, which is flung around the periphery 45 of vessel 13, exerts a rotary scouring action on the wall 43 as if it falls towards rim 17. On actuating the machine starting switch, coffee grounds and hot water are delivered to vessel 6 and, preferably, the energization of motor 30 is delayed for a short time to allow most of the brewing process to take place in this vessel. More water may be added as the brew is spun out over the rim of vessel 6 into collecting vessel 13. The brew flows in an upward direction through stainless steel wire screen 15 to collecting trough 47 and thence to cup 49. A heating element 32 is provided. The vessels 6 and 13 are separately constructed from polystyrene and joined by gluing. |
