The mechanism includes a vertical tube (10) with a fluted part (101) at its top end, as well as a lateral tube (20) with a connecting part (202) at one end for forming a rotary connection with the top end of the vertical tube. A space (204) in the bottom side of the lateral tube contains a bore (205) extending through to the top side of this tube. A grip block (30) with fluting (301) on one side contains an over-length bore (302) and is mounted in the space in the bottom side of the lateral part so that the fluting engages with that on the vertical tube. A quick-release mechanism (40) is provided by an eccentric rotary part (401), drive rod (402) and lever (403). The rotary part is connected to the lever and the drive rod and rotary part can be rotated together. The drive rod is mounted in the bore in the lateral tube and the bore in the grip block so that the latter is positioned inside the space in the lateral tube.
