Identifying a substance (X) that promotes activity and/or formation of the LOX isoform of lysyl oxidase, for regulating elastogenesis where this is abnormal or pathological, comprises contacting test compounds with cells, preferably living, that express LOX and analysis of LOX expression, particularly to identify stimulators of LOX expression. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) locating expression of LOX, and optionally also of elastin, in tissues so as to track new formation of collagen and/or elastin, by immunodetection of LOX and optionally also elastin; (2) use of LOX comprising a fully defined 417 amino acid sequence, for regulating elastogenesis where this is abnormal or pathological; and (3) cosmetic, nutriceutical or pharmaceutical composition that contains (X) or LOX, optionally also an excipient.
