The restraining system has at least one belt (1) which to absorb restraining forces has at least one section laid in a loop (2) which is bridged by an elastic element (3). The elastic element is formed by a strap section which by its ends is connected to the belt preferably by stitching (4,5). The dimensioning of the loop and the elastic element are selected so that with a defined arrangement and tensioning of the restraining system the loop is compensated for by the stretch of the elastic element. An independent claim is included for a belt for a restraining system.
