PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a performance index by reducing thermal conductivity through suppression of grain growth in thermoplastic process concerning a method of manufacturing thermoelectric material to transduce heat into electricity. SOLUTION: Powder of Bi<SB>2</SB>Te<SB>3</SB>-based thermoelectric material to which phosphorus is added is put into a dice 1 in the manner as clamping the upper and lower sides with a punch 2, and by pressurizing with the punch 2, a green compact 3 (powder compacting process). The green compact 3 is heated with a heater (not illustrated). Thereafter, by pressurizing with the punch 2 from the upper and lower directions, the green compact 3 is spread in the pressing direction and perpendicular direction to form an spread body (deforming process). Since the crystal grain size is extremely reduced in the milling process because phosphorus is added, the grain growth at the time of thermoplastic deformation (thermal spreading) can be suppressed and crystal orientation can also be improved. As a result, the thermoelectric material having higher performance index can be manufactured. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
