PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high-accuracy focusing by suppressing the influence by a subject on an outer side of a detection frame in focusing control of a focusing lens using image sharpness technology. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus is equipped with an imaging element 10 which acquires an image through the focusing lens FL, an evaluation value detecting means which detects the evaluation value indicating the degree of focusing of the focusing lens FL from the image acquired by the imaging element 10, an evaluation region setting means which sets a plurality of ranges for detecting the evaluation values by the evaluation value detecting means, an evaluation value detecting means operation means which multiplies the respective evaluation values detected by the evaluation value detecting means in a plurality of ranges set by the evaluation region setting means by prescribed weight coefficients in the case the focusing lens FL is driven in the prescribed range and a CPU 4 which drives and sets the focusing lens FL at the focusing position based on the result of the operation by the operation means and instructs the acquisition of the image by the imaging element 10.
