The injection molded pre-welding saddle (04,05), for pipe sections (02,03) of water or gas pipes (01), is molded from injected polyethylene which can be cross linked. After molding, the saddle is treated to convert the polyethylene at least partially into cross linked polyethylene (PE-X) using electron and/or gamma rays. The saddle is welded to the ends of the pipes in a pressure-tight fit by collars (06,07) incorporating heating coils.
