PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projecting optical system which can be freely carried by arranging a compact display device in the vicinity of an image surface and obliquely projecting an image and can prevent observer's space from being invaded though the optical system is a projection type and to provide a projection type display device having the projecting optical system. SOLUTION: The projection type display device for projecting an enlarged two-dimensional image from a panel or an optical modulation element to a prescribed image surface in an oblique direction is arranged on a display surface or a surface on which a screen is arranged and the vicinity of the surface, and constituted so that the members of the projection type display device are not present in the normal direction of the whole area of the prescribed image surface on the side that light is made incident on the prescribed image surface.
