PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a versatile printer capable of readily discriminating a timing mark and a paper discrimination mark and readily performing controlling of printing and to provide a printing medium. SOLUTION: An edge sensor 51 is provided to an end in the width direction of a printing medium 1 to be conveyed and a central part sensor 52 is provided to a central part in the width direction of the printing medium 1. The timing mark (a lateral line 12 for detecting a pitch) and a paper discrimination mark 13 formed on the end part or the central part in the width direction of the printing medium 1 are detected by the edge sensor 51 and the central part sensor 52. A detected signal distinguishing section takes the signal detected by each of the edge sensor 51 and the central part sensor 52 to distinguish between a timing mark detection signal and a paper discrimination mark detection signal. A print density setting section sets a print density suitable for the kind of the printing medium 1 based on the paper discrimination mark detection signal and notifies a printing controller of the set print density.
