PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a image pickup element that can make thinning-out driving of pixels with a simple constitution. SOLUTION: The image pickup element is provided with pluralities of first and second photoelectric conversion sections arranged in a matrix-like state, reading-out sections which read out electric charges from the photoelectric conversion sections, and vertical transfer sections which vertically transfer read-out electric charges. The image pickup element is also provided with horizontal transfer sections which are coupled with the vertical transfer sections and output the electric charges transferred from the vertical transfer sections by transferring the charges. Each reading-out section is composed of first and second reading-out gate electrodes and each first photoelectric conversion section is provided with a first channel stopping area which inhibits the reading-out operating of the first reading-out gate electrode. Each second photoelectric conversion section is provided with a second channel stopping area which inhibits the reading-out operation of the second reading-out gate electrode.
