<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a payment system which enables easy payment, for example, of an expense using a personal digital assistant or the like. <P>SOLUTION: A personal digital assistant 1 is connected to an authentication server 22 via the Internet 4, requests the return of barcode information, and then receives the barcode information. The personal digital assistant 1 displays a barcode pattern on a display. A POS register 32 reads this barcode pattern via a barcode reader 31, and supplies the obtained barcode information to a payment controller 33. The payment controller 33 is connected to a payment server 24 via a dedicated line 5 to obtain payment information. The POS register 32 calculates an amount claimed in accordance with the payment information obtained via the payment controller 33.
