PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce thrust force of a control shaft for a valve lift adjustment of an internal combustion engine by an auxiliary machine without including a device for assistance only. SOLUTION: A control shaft 132 moves in an axial direction, whereby an intermediate driving mechanism 120 changes the valve lift amount of an intake valve and an auxiliary machine drive device 140 changes a pump stroke of an auxiliary oil pump 150. When the valve lift amount is increased, the pump stroke is set to be reduced. When the valve lift amount is reduced, the pump stroke is set to be increased. Therefore, thrust force by the auxiliary machine drive device 140 is opposite to that by the intermediate driving mechanism 120 so that the thrust force is reduced. By so doing, the auxiliary machine drive device 140 and the auxiliary oil pump 150 take place of an assist device. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
