The impact shield consists of a body component (18), e.g. a fender, that is deployed in response to a signal from an impact detector (22) to release energy absorbing elements (24). The direction of the deployed movement can be to the front (F1) of the vehicle, or to the sides (F2), or vertically. The required movement can be produced e.g. by an air bag, and the energy absorbing components can be of a compressible foam.
