<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that prevents a chattering phenomenon or curling phenomenon of a residual matter removal means used in contact with an image carrier, without shortening the life of the image carrier. <P>SOLUTION: The ratio (idle rotation time/electrification application time), that is, the ratio of the time for which primary electrification is applied to the image carrier (electrification application time) to the idle rotation time is calculated every time that the number of prints reaches a predetermined number, specifically, 100-sheet prints. An idle rotation mode is set such that when the ratio is equal to or higher than the predetermined value, specifically, 1/5 or higher, idle rotation of the image carrier is not executed, and when the ratio is lower than the predetermined value, specifically 1/5, idle rotation of the image carrier is additionally executed for the time equal to or longer than a length of time that the ratio reaches equal to or higher than 1/5 (32.8 sec. in an example No. 4). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
