Production of pipe ballast comprises lifting a trench, and producing a ballast by profiling the ground with a profile shield (6) having an outer contour which corresponds to the outer contour of the pipe in the region in which the pipe contacts the ballast. The profile shield has a protrusion (10) in its lowermost region facing the pipe ballast to form a groove in the pipe ballast in the longitudinal direction of the pipe to be embedded. An independent claim is also included for a device for producing a pipe ballast. Preferred Features: The protrusion has a height running across the longitudinal direction of the pipe.
