PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-soluble resin having a high molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution and reduced formation of a low molecular weight product. SOLUTION: The water-soluble resin (A) is composed mainly of at least one vinyl monomer (a) water-soluble and/or becoming water-soluble by hydrolyzation and satisfies requirements (1) or (2): (1) the content of a low molecular weight component having M×0.2 or less molecular weight and the content of a high-molecular-weight component having M×2.0 or more molecular weight are at most 2% and 5%, respectively in terms of the area on the GPC chart, wherein M is the molecular weight corresponding to the peak top on a chart obtained by measuring the molecular weight of the (A) by a GPC method, and (2) the stringing length/intrinsic viscosity ratio≤4.
