The apparatus comprises a detector (4) with a magnetic recognition head (43) and an IR transmission sensor (41) positioned within a banknote glide path (11). IR light falls on the region of the banknote containing optical features and the sensor (41) detects the reflected light and analyses the spectrum to determine whether the banknote is genuine.
