The insulator consists of a dielectric fibre glass bar (1) with a slot (10) that is deeper than it is wide, e.g. 15 - 25 mm deep, containing a supple optical fibre cable (2) 5 - 10 mm in diameter and a dielectric filling material (8) that holds it in place close to the bottom of the slot without stress. The bar is surrounded by a covering layer (3) of dielectric material with a series of annular projections (30) in the form of skirts. The optical fibre cable comprises a central reinforcing element surrounded by tubes containing optical fibres inside an outer sleeve. In variants of the design the bar can have an intermediate tube inside the covering layer, optionally made from the same material, and can have a number of equally spaced slots.
