Method for compressing image data, especially a sequence of video pixel (5) images (1-3). According to the method each image pixel is assigned characteristic image values for the first image in a sequence with the corresponding pixel values only recorded for subsequent images in the sequence if their value actually changes or if a maximum number of sequences without a change occurs. The maximum counter value for each value is set in the first image of the sequence. The invention also relates to a corresponding data decompression method, output data signal, device and computer program for method implementation.
