PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of surely detecting the life end of the discharge lamp. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device comprises a power supply composed of a rectifier DB of an alternating current power supply AC and a boosting chopper 1, an inverter 2 for converting the power supply which is the output voltage VDC of the chopper 1 into a high frequency, a discharge lamp FL lighted by the high frequency output of the inverter 2, and a means for lowering the output voltage of the boosting chopper 1 when the power of the discharge lamp FL exceeds a prescribed value.
