<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To utilize an image compression encoding technology in compliance with the JPEG 2000 algorithm so as to enable a single encoder to process image data having various characteristics with a high efficiency and avoid disadvantages of the JPEG 2000 algorithm. <P>SOLUTION: One of the features of the compression encoding in compliance with the JPEG 2000 algorithm is bit plane encoding. However, images with various characteristics such as a binary image, a CG image, a pallet image, and a monochromatic image necessarily require encoding of a plurality of bit planes, and consequently there may be cases in which wasteful encoding is performed. To eliminate this disadvantage, an image characteristic discrimination means 121 discriminates the characteristics and a processing contents switching means 122 selects the processing on the basis of the result of discrimination to select an encoding style. For example, in the case of the binary image or the CG image, the image processing apparatus performs no processing from DC level conversion up to quantization processing but starts with subsequent entropy encoding processing to save wasteful processes, thereby enhancing high speed processing and the encoding efficiency. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
