<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure detection device and method capable of discriminating a sensor which breaks down in a simple configuration without making it necessary to perform any complicate calculation such as a conventional failure detecting method when the abnormality of a single sensor is generated. <P>SOLUTION: Sensors are divided into two groups, and parameters in the sensors of one group are defined as the explanation variables of parameters in the sensors of the other group.
