Managing connections in a telecommunication network comprising: ```Categorising connections into longer and shorter-lived connections (time for which they are likely to exist); using a routing algorithm to determine routes for connections across the network, the routing algorithm using weights (cost, capacity available, load, length or delay) associated with the plurality of links or nodes and controlling the establishment of new connections or redeploying existing connections to balance utilisation of the links or nodes by the longer-lived connections. The invention proposes to add an extra mechanism to regulate a distributed network. On top of routing performed by an algorithm such as OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), a mechanism is added that will improve the global performance of the network. It uses an optimisation procedure to divert established connections from congested links to under-utilised links to achieve a better overall network performance. Additionally, or alternatively, the mechanism influences the deployment of new connections (by changing link weights used by the routing algorithm) to redress imbalances. |
