PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rectangular wave output signal having 90°of phase difference each other. SOLUTION: In this encoder, one side A-phase output means 15a of an encoder signal output circuit has delay circuits 18a-20a for detecting a leading edge of an A-phase to generate a rectangular wave of a prescribed time, an AND 17a and a flip-flop 21a. In addition thereto, the means 15a is provided with an n-bit counter 22a for measuring a time between a leading edge of the rectangular wave and the next leading edge, an n-bit register 16a for latching and holding the time between the edges in the leading edge of the A-phase, a one-bit shift circuit 23a for right-shifting a held value hereinbefore by one bit, an n-bit counter 25a for detecting the leading edge of the A-phase to be cleared to "0" in the rectangular wave of a prescribed time, a comparator 24a for comparing a result of the one-bit shift circuit 23a with an output from the n-bit counter 25a, and a JK flip-flop 26a for detecting the leading edge of the A-phase to input the rectangular wave of the prescribed time into a J-input.
