PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming the outline of a can shell by which the lowering of strength of the can shell is prevented, the inner surface of the can shell can be prevented from being scratched, film on the inner surface of the can shell can surely be prevented from being damaged, even the outline of a can shell with closed one side can be easily formed and an outline formation with high designability can be easily applied to the can shell at a low cost without complicating the structure of an apparatus for forming the outline of the can shell, and to provide the apparatus for forming the outline of the can shell. SOLUTION: Recess-deformed parts of a specified shape are formed on the peripheral wall of the can shell 4 by pressure-contacting, from the outside, a pressing member 44 on the peripheral wall of the can shell 4 the inside of which is maintained at a specified pressure with gas.
