<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facial area extracting method and device capable of properly extracting a facial area by excluding an object with a hue similar to a face of a person. <P>SOLUTION: Image data is analyzed to detect an area (a flesh color area) having a hue of flesh color (step S118), and area division of the obtained flesh color area is carried out by chroma to recognize size of each area (step S120). Focal length information of a photo-optical system is acquired, and a maximum size of an actually photographed face is predicted from the focal length (step S122). Of each flesh color area subjected to chroma division, an area larger than the predicted maximum size is determined that it is not the facial area, and it is excluded from facial area candidates (step S124).
