An optical recording medium wherein information is recorded in a photon mode comprises a recording layer containing a material whose physical properties are changed through irradiation with a light having a certain wavelength lambda and a wavelength selective absorption layer which is at least arranged on the light incident side relative to the recording layer. The wavelength selective absorption layer contains a material which absorbs at least a light having the certain wavelength lambda and transmits at least a light having a wavelength nlambda (n is at least one integer satisfying the relation n >= 2). In a recording method for such an optical recording medium, recording is carried out by causing n-photon absorption in a light focusing area in the recording layer by irradiating the optical recording medium with a light having the wavelength nlambda at a certain intensity.
