The method involves monitoring at least the space (BR) to the side and rear of the driver's door to a defined width (b) and depth (a), detecting an object in the monitored space, determining its distance and speed, computing a warning distance as a function of the object speed and a defined reaction time and outputting a warning signal if the object distance is less than the warning distance. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a door collision warning system for a motor vehicle.
