PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a signal recording and reproducing camera with which a video image before recording into a record medium is actually started after a recording start button is pushed and a video image before pushing the recording start button can be checked later. SOLUTION: The signal recording and reproducing camera comprises an image pick-up means image-picks up an video image of an object; a recording start operation means for starting recording action by operating it; a first record medium into which a video image signal from the image pick-up means is recorded when the recording start operation means is operated; and a second record medium into which a video image signal, image-picked up with the image pick-up means at least before recording of the video image signal into the first record medium is started, is recorded. At recording the video image signal, the video image signal of a time period from operating of a recording start button 8 to actual starting of recording into a magnetic tape is recorded into a solid-state memory 2 before recording to the magnetic tape, so that, even when unexpected extemporaneous recording due to decisive moment and sudden turn of matters of the object is required, the video image signal can be recorded, and checked at reproducing.
