PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer in which an ink end prevention mode can be released readily through key operation of a user, a print system comprising it, a print control method, a program for realizing the print control method, and a recording medium. SOLUTION: The ink jet printer comprises a mode setting means 21 for recognizing the residual quantity of ink in an ink cartridge 71 through detection and/or calculation and setting, based on the recognition results, any one of an ink end prevention mode for stopping or regulating print operation when a fact is recognized that the residual quantity of ink is little or an ink use-up mode allowing continuous print operation regardless of the residual quantity of ink thus judged, and a means 11 for controlling print operation based on set mode information.
