PURPOSE: A method for mitigating collision in a communication system by using contention-based MAC(Media Access Control) is provided to restrict a slot access to terminals colliding with each other if the two terminals collide with each other by simultaneously accessing an optional mini slot, and to permit an access attempt at a new terminal if the terminals succeed in the access, thereby mitigating collision. CONSTITUTION: When a base station starts operating, each CW(Contention Window) size and a previous state value are initialized as '0'(101), and the number of entire mini slots and the CW sizes are broadcasted to each terminal(102). The terminals attempt accessing an optional mini slot, and the base station receives a certain mini slot(103). The base station decides whether collision occurs from information on the received mini slot(104). If so, the base station decides whether the CW sizes are '0'(105). If so, the base station sets the CW sizes to '2' and sets the state value to '0'(106). If the CW sizes are not '0', the base station increases the CW sizes by 1 and sets the state value to '0'(107).
