PURPOSE: A direct injection diesel engine with a pilot injection nozzle is provided to maximize pilot injection efficiency by injecting fuel from the nozzle into the bowl of the piston. CONSTITUTION: A bowl(40) is formed in a piston head(20) of a cylinder(10) forming the diesel engine, and recessed at both sides. A main injection nozzle(50) is installed in the cylinder head of the upper part of the cylinder to inject fuel to the center of the bowl. A pilot injection nozzle(60) is spaced from the main injection nozzle in the cylinder head, and operated in pilot injection. Fuel is injected from the pilot injection nozzle into the bowl of the piston head, and temperature of the bowl is increased with flowing pilot fuel into the bowl from heating by compressing air in moving up the piston. Ignition delay time is reduced by injecting main fuel to the bowl accurately with opening the main injection nozzle.
