PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem wherein there is a concern of generating seizure between a valve stem and a lifter body since a cut-out part, etc. is clogged with contamination to make supply of lubricating oil to the inside of the lifter body insufficient in a conventional valve lifter. SOLUTION: A disc-shaped shim 25 is relatively rotatably provided within a recessed part 27 provided on an upper part of the lifter body 23 of this valve lifter 10. A passage groove 28 is formed along a radial direction at an upper end part of a peripheral wall 23a of the lifter body 23. The passage groove 28 is formed in an uphill slope from an outer end side opening 28a toward an inner end part 28b. A circular ring groove 29 is formed on a bottom surface 27a of the recessed part 27. An opening hole 30 communicated with the circular ring groove 29 and oriented to an upper surface on an outer peripheral side of a spring retainer is passed and formed at a position facing to the passage groove 28 of a top wall 23b. A communicating passage normally communicated with the inside 23d of the lifter body 23 is constituted of the passage groove 28, the circular ring groove 29 and the opening hole 30.
