<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display to realize display in a reflective mode with high-quality black display. <P>SOLUTION: The display has a reflective region where display is carried out by using the light which enters the substrate in the observer's side, passes through a polarizing element, a retardation element and a liquid crystal layer in this order, and is reflected on a reflecting layer. The retardation Δn×d of the liquid crystal layer varies in the range of Δn1×d≤Δn×d≤Δn2×d in accordance with the applied voltage, and black display is performed when Δn×d=Δn1×d, wherein Δn1×d satisfies a relation of Δn1×d≤λ/4 for the whole wavelength λ (from 400 nm to 700 nm) in the visible region. The retardation of the retardation element increases monotonically with increase in λ. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
