The invention relates to a process for cleaning open water areas from pollution, in particular from oil and can be used for spill cleanup activities after accidents of oil tankers and underwater oil pipelines. The aim of said invention is to reduce working hours for setting up a retention barrier above a source of pollution and to make it possible to set up said barrier at any depth. The inventive method consists in forming a barrier from a band which is spread out in the form of a dome. Prior to the formation of the dome, anchors with ropes are dropped around the source of pollution. During unfolding, the band is connected to the ropes with the aid of movable flexible ties, the coils of the band are connected to each other and loads are fixed to the base of the dome in order to drop it onto the bottom.
