<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) failure even if the PMD in transmission signal has time dependency at PMD measurement in an optical fiber communication system. <P>SOLUTION: In a step 350, the optical signal in a plurality of frequency bands is transferred through an optical fiber. In a step 352, the polarized light in each optical band is measured over its spectrum width at a receiver position which is far away from a transmitter and much affected by PMD caused by double refraction. In a step 353, a related polarization state is determined from a polarization parameter which has been measured. In a step 354, a parameter is calculated and a PMD failure is acquired along an optical fiber path for each measurement band. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
