PURPOSE: Provided is a nonionic associative thickener, which is prepared by an environmental-friendly method without using an organic solvent for dehydration, and has excellent thickening effect in a waterborne system. CONSTITUTION: The nonionic associative thickener is based on the compound of formula 1 having at least one hydrophobic end group and comprising an ester bond and an urethane bond in the molecular structure, wherein each of j and k is the same or different and represents an integer of 1 or more, i is an integer of 1 or more, R is a C8-C26 hydrophobic alkyl group, R1 is a C6 or higher alkyl or aromatic group, and R2 is H or a fatty acid residue having the formula of -COR.
