The method involves detecting the pressure occurring in an inlet channel (7) with an inlet valve (5) open, comparing it with a threshold value and using the result of the comparison to determine the direction of rotation of the piston machine, whereby a choke device (11) arranged in the inlet channel is closed at least for the duration of the pressure measurement. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an arrangement for detecting a piston engine's rotation direction (b) a controller for controlling and/or regulating a piston engine (c) and a computer program for implementing the inventive method.
