PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover/regenerate potential energy of a work machine, and facilitate laying of piping regarding a device composition. SOLUTION: The potential energy recovery/regeneration device for the work machine is provided with the work machine 6 having a boom 13 with a base end part pivotally attached to a revolving frame 30, boom hydraulic cylinders 16 and 16 connected to the revolving frame 30 and the boom 13, an assist cylinder 18 connected to the revolving frame 30 and the boom 13, and an accumulator 85 accumulating pressure oil sent out from the assist cylinder 18 during downward turning movement of the boom 13. Arrangement of bottom parts 16d and head parts 18c of the boom cylinders 16 and 16 is reversed with respect to arrangement of a bottom part 18d and a head part 18c of the assist cylinder 18.
